On March 14, 2007, The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) ordered
drug-maker Sanofi-Aventis to strengthen its product labeling on Ambien to
include stronger language concerning the potential risks.
After taking
the prescription sleep-aid Ambien, some users have been reported to engage in
sleep-driving--driving while not fully awake--and sustaining severe injuries.
Resulting car accidents place everyone on the road at peril.
Other risks
to taking Ambien include anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction) and angiodema
(severe facial swelling).
Reports have also surfaced of people making
phone calls and preparing and eating food while asleep. Many of these Ambien
users have no memory of the event.
It is estimated that 10 to 15 percent
of the adult population has chronic insomnia. It is therefore crucial for the
public to be informed of the adverse events related to Ambien and other
sedative-hypnotic drugs.
