One approach to cure anemia

Treatment with epoetin alfa (Epogen, Procrit). This is a synthetic form of erythropoietin, a hormone produced in the kidneys. Cancer treatments can lower the level of this substance in the blood. Synthetic forms of this substance became available in the 1990s, and today this approach to treating anemia in cancer patients is the preferred approach to cure anemia. Epogen and Procrit are administered by injection, usually on a weekly basis. However, ask your health care provider about new formulations that can be injected less frequently.
