ASBESTOS IN ALASKA
September 10, 2009 - According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Anchorage-based contractor Coldfoot Environmental Services Inc. failed to provide proper asbestos-related notifications to inspectors who visited three demolition sites in Alaska, including the Harborview Hospital in Valdez and two warehouses in Valdez and Juneau.
A spokesperson for the EPA said the lack of notification made it difficult for the federal agency to conduct timely inspections, as the law requires.
“It is important to notify EPA so we have timely and accurate information to conduct our inspections and insure contractors are following the asbestos regulations,” Marcia Combes, EPA's Alaska office director, told the media.
Coldfoot's community service project will involve removing asbestos insulation from a boiler and piping in a building owned by a nonprofit community arts group.
