Tests for asbestos exposure should be administered to people who fit the description below. These people include those that: have had contact with asbestos through a "burst exposure" i.e. a very heavy concentration of asbestos in a limited amount of time, difficulty breathing, ongoing contact with asbestos, or friends or relatives of people who have worked in asbestos-related trades even if the former employee asbestos has no noticeable symptoms.
In general, there is a group of diseases that have been linked to asbestos exposure: Asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung) and lung cancer. The main indicators of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the detectable symptoms of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is essential to seek a professional opinion if you imagine that you have been exposed to asbestos. Initial testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Supplementary tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Physicians may speak a language that may be unlcear to the layman. Don't fear asking your physician about your circumstance. If you don't fully understand your doctor, have him break it down so can better understand.
Weitz & Luxenberg supports the notion that all citizens who have participated in the U.S. Armed orces should receive the services they deserve. This includes compensation for deadly diseases such as mesothelioma.
