May 18, 2009 – Famous for its boardwalk, sandy beaches, spectacular view of the Atlantic Ocean and casino gambling, Atlantic City is a big gamble for construction workers who risk asbestos exposure every day as they change the landscape of this sparkling seaside resort, known for its prime real estate.
Demolishing old buildings ladened with asbestos insulation (the carcinogenic fire-retardant) is an occupational hazard in the U.S. construction industry, one of the nation’s most dangerous labor industries for asbestos exposure.
In the gambling resort town of Atlantic City, where building ritzy hotels and glitzy casinos is the name of the game, workers need more than just good luck to avoid an asbestos encounter.
New Jersey is the No. 6 state in the nation for asbestos-related deaths
The state of New Jersey has a poor record when it comes to asbestos. According to the study’s findings, New Jersey is the sixth most deadly state in the country for asbestos mortalities. Between 1979 and 2001, at least 2,775 persons died from asbestos in New Jersey. This figure is a low estimate because the federal government did not begin tracking mesothelioma as a cause of death until 1999.
On the study’s list of the Top 100 Counties in the United States recording deaths due to asbestos, New Jersey listed 12 counties – a figure matched only by California and Florida.
Atlantic City is in Atlantic County, NJ, which the study lists as the 13th deadliest county in the state for asbestos. Though a resort community, Atlantic City has a population of 35,770, with 266,268 residents living in the Atlantic City-Hammonton metropolitan statistical area.
