Atlantic County, NJ
– Ranked high for asbestos-related deaths
A lawyer from the personal injury law firm of Weitz & Luxenberg reports on the dangers of asbestos exposure in Atlantic County, NJ.
May 18, 2009 – Out of all the counties in the state of New Jersey, Atlantic County, NJ, has the dubious distinction of being ranked No. 13 for asbestos-related deaths – this, according to a unique study conducted by the EWG Action Fund, a non-profit environmental research group headquartered in Washington, D.C.
The study is the first-ever wide-range examination of U.S. mortality figures related to asbestos, as reported to the federal government via death certificate records from 1979 through 2001.
The study says that between 1979 and 2001, as many as 113 people died of asbestosis or mesothelioma in Atlantic County, NJ. This figure is a low estimate and could actually be much higher, says the report, because the federal government did not begin tracking mesothelioma as a cause of death until 1999.
New Jersey is ranked No. 6 state in the country for asbestos mortalities
The entire state of New Jersey has a poor record when it comes to fatal asbestos exposures. On the study’s list of the Top 100 Counties in the United States recording deaths due to asbestos, New Jersey listed 12 counties – a figure matched only by California and Florida.
According to the study’s findings, New Jersey is the sixth most deadly state in the nation for asbestos exposure. Between 1979 and 2001, at least 2,775 people died from asbestos in New Jersey. This figure is a low estimate and could actually be as high as 3,505, says the report.
Furthermore, there are two government-listed asbestos contamination sites in New Jersey, located in Edgewater and Trenton.
