– And No. 37 in the Nation!
News Update: An asbestos-injury lawyer from Weitz & Luxenberg, recognized for attaining record-breaking verdicts and settlements for injured clients, reports here on the dangers of asbestos exposure in Bergen County, N.J.
May 11, 2009 – Out of 21 New Jersey counties surveyed, Bergen County has the unenviable distinction of being the No. 4 county in New Jersey for asbestos deaths – this, according to a unique study conducted by the EWG Action Fund, a non-profit environmental research group headquartered in Washington, D.C.
The study is the first-ever wide-range examination of asbestos-related U.S. mortality figures. The report distinguishes death statistics on three levels – state, county and city – as reported to the federal government via death certificate records from 1979 through 2001.
New Jersey ranks No. 6
According to the findings, New Jersey is the sixth most deadly state in the country for deaths attributed to asbestos exposure. Between 1979 and 2001, at least 2,775 people died from asbestos exposure in New Jersey. The report emphasizes that this figure could be as high as 3,505 because the federal government did not begin tracking mesothelioma as a cause of death until 1999.
Bergen County - No. 37 for asbestos deaths
On the study’s list of the Top 100 Counties in the United States recording deaths due to asbestos exposure, New Jersey contributes 12 asbestos-plagued counties – a figure of great concern for any state and matched only by California and Florida.
On the list of the Top 100 Counties, Bergen County, N.J., is ranked No. 37 in the nation for asbestos-related mortalities. The study says that between 1979 and 2001, more than 254 people died of mesothelioma and asbestosis in Bergen County.
