EPA calls Pennsylvania's hazardous BoRit asbestos site a national superfund priority
EPA designates Pennsylvania's asbestos-contaminated BoRit site a public health threat.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced that the BoRit site in Ambler, Pa., has been added to the agency’s Superfund National Priorities List (NPL).
The addition of the BoRit site to the National Priorities List designates it as a site where hazardous contaminants could impact public health and the environment.
From the early 1900s until the 1980s, the BoRit site was used for the disposal of asbestos-containing materials (ACM) from a former asbestos manufacturing plant. The contaminated site includes a two-acre waste pile, a 15-acre reservoir owned by Wissahickon Waterfowl Preserve, and an 11-acre disposal area that was once used as a playground.
Both direct and secondary exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious illnesses, such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer or asbestosis.
