May 13, 2009 – Burlington County has the unenviable distinction of being the No. 7 county in New Jersey for asbestos deaths – this, according to a unique study conducted by the EWG Action Fund, a non-profit environmental research group headquartered in Washington, D.C.
Six New Jersey counties actually recorded more deaths from asbestos exposure than Burlington; they are: Camden, Somerset, Middlesex, Bergen, Glouster and Ocean counties.
The study is the first-ever wide-range examination of asbestos-related U.S. mortality figures. The report distinguishes death statistics on three levels – state, county and city – as reported to the federal government via death certificate records from 1979 through 2001.
New Jersey – No. 6 state in the country
According to the findings, New Jersey is the sixth most deadly state in the nation for deaths attributed to asbestos exposure. Between 1979 and 2001, at least 2,775 people died from asbestos exposure in New Jersey. The report emphasizes that this figure could be as high as 3,505 because the federal government did not begin tracking mesothelioma as a cause of death until 1999.
