Camden County, NJ – Ranked No. 1 New
Jersey County for Asbestos-Related Deaths;
– and No. 6 in the Nation!
News Update: A Weitz & Luxenberg asbestos-injury lawyer reports on the dangers of asbestos exposure in Camden County, NJ.
April 22, 2009 – Out of 21 New Jersey counties surveyed, Camden County has the dubious distinction of being the No. 1 county in the state for deaths related to asbestos – this, according to a unique study conducted by the EWG Action Fund, a non-profit environmental research group headquartered in Washington, D.C.
The study is the first-ever wide-range examination of asbestos-related U.S. mortality figures. The report distinguishes death statistics on three levels – state, county and city – as reported to the federal government via death certificate records from 1979 through 2001.
New Jersey ranked No. 6
According to the findings, New Jersey is the sixth most deadly state in the country for deaths attributed to asbestos exposure. Between 1979 and 2001, at least 2,775 people died from mesothelioma or asbestosis in New Jersey. The report emphasizes that this figure could actually be as high as 3,505 because the federal government did not begin tracking mesothelioma as a cause of death until 1999.
Camden among Top 100 U.S. counties for asbestos mortalities
On the study’s list of the "Top 100" U.S. counties recording deaths due to asbestos exposure, New Jersey contributed 12 asbestos-plagued counties – a figure matched only by California and Florida.
Camden County, N.J., is ranked No. 6 on the "Top 100" U.S. county list. The study says that between 1979 and 2001, more than 500 people died of mesothelioma and asbestosis in Camden County.
