The tests done at a Columbia County office did not determine how much of the air contamination was asbestos and how much of it was something else.

Asbestos, which once was widely used in construction because of its fire-retardant properties, has been found to cause cancer and other respiratory diseases if ingested into the lungs in sufficient quantity.

But it is believed that citizens transacting business at the courthouse, or people working there, have no cause for alarm.
