NEWS UPDATE:
EPA is developing procedures for the identification of asbestos in vermiculite and VAI. It is expected that these efforts will have practical applications for home owners concerned about the presence of asbestos in VAI.
A research method to detect asbestos in bulk VAI was developed by a leading group of asbestos experts (See “Cincinnati Method”). This method is awaiting validation.
EPA is developing a test to determine whether VAI originated from the asbestos contaminated mine in Libby, Montana. This test will be designed to be used by existing commercial labs to analyze VAI samples from homes.
