December 21, 2009 - Residents in the Fort Myers, Florida, community of Whiskey Creek will hold a meeting shortly to discuss their worries and concerns over possible asbestos contamination in their neighborhood.
As reported by WINK News, local residents became concerned about asbestos exposure when the toxic mineral was discovered during work on the Summerlin Road project.
Asbestos exposure can lead to serious illnesses, including lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma.

These Florida counties are: Broward (ranked No. 10 in the nation), Pinellas (No. 11), Palm Beach (No. 22), Dade (No. 23), Hillsborough (No. 45), Pasco (No. 48), Lee (No. 54), Duval (No. 58), Volusia (No. 85), Orange (No. 92), Sarasota (No. 93), and Brevard (No. 100).
Residents unite against asbestos threat
Fort Myers resident Michele DePalma is quoted in the news report as saying, “I’m not supposed to be afraid in my own home … I’m scared. I want to know what’s going to be done about it ... We deserve to know what’s happening in our community. Are we going to be sick?”
DePalma is reportedly planning to host a meeting for area residents regarding these concerns.
