September 17, 2009 - A former Illinois postal worker charged in a lawsuit that he developed mesothelioma cancer from occupational asbestos exposure.
After a three-week trial, the jury agreed, granting him a $2-million verdict last month.
The postman asserted that he was exposed to asbestos while using certain products during his work duties.
The 69-year-old was awarded $1.5 million in damages, and his wife was granted $500,000 for loss of consortium, The State Journal-Register reported.
Government sources estimate that in the next decade more than 35,000 people nationwide will be diagnosed with the deadliest form of asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma.
