International hot spot for asbestos consumption
The lion's share of India's asbestos consumption is centered in the city of Gujarat.
December 5, 2008 – India’s intense industrial activity has helped label the country an asbestos hot spot, according to a new report by the International Ban Asbestos Secretariat.
The report was circulated by diplomats and organizations at the recent Rotterdam Convention, and lists the Indian city of Gujarat as the major hub for asbestos use.
Asbestos – a mineral with long fibrous crystals that has been used for more than a century for building insulation and piping – becomes a health danger when high levels are inhaled over a period of time.
More than 31,000 factories in India are involved in manufacturing, ship breaking, and chemical use. These industrial activities expose workers to asbestos on a daily basis. Although the number of people in India who develop mesothelioma is growing, no compensation is received for their disease.
Don’t be a victim – Seek justice!
Government sources estimate that in the next decade more than 35,000 people nationwide will be diagnosed with mesothelioma. This disease is most often the result of industrial workplace exposure to asbestos – and usually contracted through employers’ blatant disregard for the health and safety of their workers.
That’s why people diagnosed with mesothelioma and their surviving family members have strong cases in court. Weitz & Luxenberg has protected the legal rights of workers for 25 years – longer than most law firms in the nation. And in that time its attorneys have won several billion dollars in verdicts and settlements for its clients.
If you have a mesothelioma injury, please complete the form on this page for a free evaluation of your legal rights. There is no cost to you until we win a settlement or a verdict.
