With its strong track record for achieving record-breaking verdict and settlement awards for workers diagnosed with asbestos-related mesothelioma and lung cancer, the New York-based law firm of Weitz & Luxenberg is pleased to announce that it is expanding its practice to Pennsylvania.

April 21, 2009 – Pennsylvania is ranked the fourth state in the nation – after California, Florida and New York – for deaths attributed specifically to mesothelioma and asbestosis, according to a unique study of U.S. asbestos-related mortalities by the EWG Action Fund, a non-profit environmental research group headquartered in Washington, D.C.

This first-ever detailed study of deaths from asbestos exposure presents U.S. mortality statistics on three levels – state, county and city – as reported to the federal government via death certificate records from 1979 through 2001.

Pennsylvania has five counties on the EWG’s list of the Top 100 counties in the U.S. for deaths due to mesothelioma or asbestosis. The five counties are: Philadelphia County (ranked No. 3), Delaware County (No. 13); Allegheny County (No. 16); Montgomery County (No. 17) and Lancaster County (No. 84).

Time to seek justice!

The report projects that in the next decade 35,000 people in the United States will be diagnosed with mesothelioma. Mesothelioma, fatal in most cases within two years after diagnosis, is most often the result of industrial workplace exposure to asbestos, and usually contracted through employers’ emphasis on profits over the health and safety of its workers.

That’s why workers diagnosed with mesothelioma (usually the family breadwinner) and surviving family members have strong cases in court for obtaining monetary damages to pay for medical bills and lost wages.
