EPA orders military to clean up contaminants at McGuire Air Force Base, reports Weitz & Luxenberg NJ asbestos lawyer . . .
In July, 2007, the Environmental Protection Agency issued an order to the military to clean up contaminants at the McGuire Air Force Base in Burlington County, NJ, located 15 miles from Trenton.
Areas requiring cleanup include landfills, fire training areas, pesticide mixing shops, fuel storage and leak areas, underground tanks and fuel lines, a PCB spill cite, and a wastewater treatment plant sludge-disposal area.
Asbestos is also a concern, as this fire-retardant material was used lavishly during WWII to quell the threat of fire during combat situations.
McGuire Air Force Base hosts the flying needs of next-door neighbor Fort Dix. The base was established in 1937 and first opened to military aircraft in 1941. During the WWII years, the military used asbestos insulation materials more than at any other time, especially at air force bases and navy shipyards.
According to the 2000 census, 6,478 people, including 1,466 families, reside at McGuire Air Force Base.
A double-barreled asbestos threat
To complicate an already risky health situation for McGuire personnel, the air force base is located in New Jersey’s Burlington County, which has the unenviable distinction of being the No. 7 county in New Jersey for asbestos deaths – according to a unique recent study conducted by the EWG Action Fund, a non-profit environmental research group headquartered in Washington, D.C.
Only six of 21 New Jersey counties recorded more deaths from asbestos exposure, according to the study; they are: Camden, Somerset, Middlesex, Bergen, Glouster and Ocean counties.
The truth about asbestos
Government sources estimate that in the next decade more than 35,000 people nationwide will be diagnosed with mesothelioma, the deadliest of asbestos-caused cancers.
This disease is most often the result of industrial workplace exposure to asbestos – and usually contracted through employers’ blatant disregard for the health and safety of their workers. That’s why employees diagnosed with mesothelioma and their family members have strong cases in court.
