Learn more about the dangers of asbestos exposure and decide if you should be tested. The following is a list of individuals who have an elevated chance of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Anyone with breathing problems;
- Those with prolonged exposure to asbestos;
- Those who think they have had prolonged exposure to asbestos;
- Immediate family members of those who have worked in asbestos-related areas, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no visible symptoms or difficulty breathing.
In general, there is a group of diseases that are associated with asbestos exposure: Asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung) and lung cancer. Some symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is important to seek a professional opinion if you think that you have been exposed to asbestos. One form of testing is an X-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Additional tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. At times, medical professionals may speak a language puzzling to the average person. If you are confused, you can ask your physician about your state.
If you don't understand your doctor, get him to break it down so can better understand. All those who have participated in the United States Armed Forces should receive the benefits they deserve.
