NEW ORLEANS ASBESTOS
Demolition is delayed for asbestos-contaminated apartment complex in New Orleans, La.
In June 2009, residents in the New Orleans East, La. area were disappointed to learn that the demolition of an asbestos-contaminated apartment complex was stopped shortly after the project began. The complex, which had been damaged beyond repair in Hurricane Katrina, was a source of concern for those living in the area because of environmental hazards and vermin infestation.
When demolition began in June 2009, it was discovered that the company performing the work had not secured the appropriate permits from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). The DEQ requires that properties undergoing renovation or demolition be tested for the presence of asbestos before demolition can begin.
As soon as the DEQ concludes its investigation and the asbestos is removed according to DEQ regulations, the demolition will resume.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious illnesses such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer or asbestosis.
