News Bulletin: Asbestos abatement planned for Niagara, NY, on Canada border:
August 17, 2009 -- A defense appropriation bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives last month includes more than $1 million for the Army Corps of Engineers to clean up portions of the Lake Ontario Ordnance Works site in Niagara Falls, N.Y., the firm's Niagara Falls asbestos lawyers report.
“It’s almost 50 years in the making,” said one supervisor who worked with Congresswoman Louise Slaughter to secure the funds.
The funding will go toward the removal of asbestos-containing materials, demolition of unsafe structures and installation of protective grates, barriers, and signs, according to a release by the Congresswoman and quoted in a news report by the Niagara Gazette.
The funds will also pay for analysis of environmental samples to determine the presence of chemical and radiological contaminants in the water and sludge.
The U.S. Senate must now vote on the bill. U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York are overseeing its passage.
Government sources estimate that in the next decade more than 35,000 people nationwide will be diagnosed with the deadliest form of asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is most often the result of asbestos exposure on jobs – and usually contracted through employers’ blatant disregard for the health and safety of their workers.
