Cost of repairs to the Ogdensburg, NY, Remington Art Museum rise after asbestos is discovered
July 28, 2009 - When repairs to the Frederic Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg, NY, began this month, officials quickly discovered the project would be more extensive than originally anticipated, due to the discovery of asbestos-containing sealant in the foundation.
The 100-year-old Parish Mansion building is home to one of the most extensive collections of Remington’s paintings, sketches and sculptures in the United States. The building, once the home of the artist's widow, Eva Caten Remington, was founded in 1923 as the Remington Art Memorial.
The porch at the Parish Mansion has deteriorated over the years, and the discovery of asbestos-containing materials (ACM) has helped escalate the cost of repairs to more than $250,000, from $190,000.
Even short-term exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious illnesses, such as mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis.
