May 13, 2009 – Out of all state counties surveyed, Paramus’ own Bergen County has the dubious distinction of being the No. 4 county in New Jersey for asbestos deaths – this, according to a unique study conducted by the EWG Action Fund, a non-profit environmental research group headquartered in Washington, D.C.
Only Camden, Somerset and Middlesex counties recorded more deaths from asbestos exposure.
The study is the first-ever wide-range examination of asbestos-related mortality figures in the United States, as reported to the federal government via death certificate records from 1979 through 2001.
Bergen County – No. 37 in the nation
On the study’s list of the Top 100 Counties in the United States recording deaths due to asbestos, Bergen County, N.J., is ranked No. 37 for asbestos-related mortalities. The study says that between 1979 and 2001, more than 254 people died of mesothelioma and asbestosis in Bergen County.
