San Francisco jury awards $4.3M to three families who lost breadwinners to asbestos-related disease
February 23, 2009 -- A San Francisco jury last month ordered a Northern California insulation company to pay more than $4.3 million in damages to the families of three industrial pipe fitters who died of lung cancer caused by asbestos.
The jury found that Plant Insulation Company, formerly a major industrial insulation products and contractor, was 59 percent at fault for the death of one worker who was exposed to asbestos while working at a variety of industrial sites.
The company was also found liable for the deaths of a Sacramento County resident who worked as a pipe fitter at Bay Area oil refineries, and a Sebastopol resident who worked at chemical plants and oil refineries in Contra Costa County.

Government sources estimate that in the next decade more than 35,000 people nationwide will be diagnosed with the deadliest form of asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma. This disease is most often the result of industrial workplace exposure to asbestos – and usually contracted through employers’ blatant disregard for the health and safety of their workers.
