BREAKING NEWS
July 14, 2009 -- San Francisco's historic Pier 70 is in need of asbestos removal. City officials are seeking funding to renovate the pier and remove deadly asbestos from some two dozen adjacent buildings, with the goal of developing the area for business and tourism.
"I think eventually this could become a significant new neighborhood that provides thousands of jobs while retaining the character and the historical integrity of the site," said the manager of the San Francisco project.
Pier 70 is home to crumbling 19th century buildings and some 50 acres of prime waterfront property located south of the Mission Bay district. Developers plan to clean up the area and eventually build a new museum, and develop retail space, offices, and restaurants.
All told, 20 historic San Francisco buildings (totaling about 3 million square feet of space) will require asbestos abatement, said our lawyer.

Under federal law, asbestos materials must be professionally removed from any structure before renovation begins. This is to prevent asbestos exposure among workers and nearby residents, who would otherwise be vulnerable to airborne asbestos fibers.
Asbestos exposure can lead to many diseases, including lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma.
