May 13, 2009 – Teaneck’s own Bergen County has the dubious distinction of being the No. 4 county in New Jersey for asbestos-related deaths, according to a unique study conducted by the EWG Action Fund, a non-profit environmental research group headquartered in Washington, D.C.

Only Camden, Somerset and Middlesex counties recorded more deaths from asbestos exposure.

The study is the first-ever wide-range examination of asbestos-related mortality figures in the United States, as reported to the federal government via death certificate records from 1979 through 2001.

Bergen County – No. 37 in the nation

On the study’s list of the Top 100 Counties in the United States recording deaths due to asbestos, Bergen County, N.J., is ranked No. 37. The study says that between 1979 and 2001, more than 254 people in the county died of mesothelioma and asbestosis.
