ASBESTOS IN THE NEWS
Two firms arraigned on asbestos charges in Worcester, Mass.
February 23, 2009 — Two Massachusetts companies renovating a 10-story building in Worcester, Mass., were arraigned Friday on charges of violating the Clean Air Act and state asbestos disposal laws in connection with demolition and renovation work at the former hotel in 2007.
Residents were living in the building, Bancroft Commons at 50 Franklin St., when workers demolished structural elements of the building that contained asbestos, a human carcinogen known to cause lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma.
State prosecutors charge the two companies, Mayo Group Development LLC and Worcester Commons LLC, with:
According to the complaint, employees from the state DEP witnessed demolition debris being thrown out of a window at 50 Franklin St. in February, 2007. They found impacted asbestos-containing material in the building and in a waste pile and disposal trailer on the premises. Authorities also allege that asbestos from the site was scheduled to be brought to a landfill not designated to receive it.
The Mayo Group is a Boston-based real estate investment, development and management company that is redeveloping the building, and Worcester Commons is the property’s owner of record, prosecutors said.
The truth about asbestos
Government sources estimate that in the next decade more than 35,000 people nationwide will be diagnosed with the deadliest form of asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma. This disease is most often the result of industrial workplace exposure to asbestos – and usually contracted through employers’ blatant disregard for the health and safety of their workers.
