Asbestos abatement news update
November 12, 2010 – Asbestos abatement (that is, the removal of toxic asbestos-containing products from public buildings), is a growing business in New Jersey (NJ) as state residents begin recognizing the financial and public health advantages that asbestos removal projects ultimately bring to real estate values and the health of future state residents.
But due to the toxic dangers of such work and the large quantity of asbestos-containing products still lingering in NJ public buildings, including NJ school buildings, asbestos abatement is not an inexpensive option. Like all contractors, however, companies that perform asbestos abatement services will provide an estimate on asbestos removal costs.
A licensed asbestos removal contractor is empowered by law to perform any projects involving asbestos abatement. NJ asbestos abatement contractors are equipped to test materials for asbestos content, evaluate the condition of the material, and determine the need for any corrective action.
Requirements for asbestos abatement in NJ
Asbestos removal training is required under the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act of 1986 (AHERA). Congress enacted AHERA that year to protect workers in all trades from occupational asbestos exposure.
In New Jersey, the Department of Labor’s Asbestos Control and Licensing Section is responsible for licensing asbestos abatement contractors and issuing permits for asbestos abatement workers and supervisors employed by licensed contractors.
Asbestos is no longer mined in the United States, but it is still imported and used in the construction and automobile industries. The heaviest asbestos exposure risks today occur in the construction industry, especially during renovation or demolition projects when toxic building products are ripped out and destroyed. Such conditions lead to the inhalation of dangerous airborne asbestos fibers, the primary pathway for occupational asbestos exposure.
Malignant mesothelioma cancer is the most serious form of asbestos-related diseases. Mesothelioma affects the lining of the lungs and is diagnosed in 3,000 individuals every year in the United States. Mesothelioma commonly leads to death within months of a diagnosis.
NJ state mortality statistics
At least 2,775 people in New Jersey were killed by asbestosis and mesothelioma between 1979 and 2001, according to a study conducted by the EWG Action Fund, a research organization in Washington, D.C.
In New Jersey, at least 1,045 persons died specifically of mesothelioma between 1979 and 2001, but that figure could be as high as 1,775, because the federal government did not recording mesothelioma as a cause of death until 1999.
