Abandoned Abington, VA Motel Contaminated with Asbestos
In April 2009, the Washington County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing regarding the abandoned Robert E. Lee Motel in Abington, VA. The hotel, which has been vacant since the 1980s, is contaminated with asbestos.
In addition to asbestos concerns, the building has been determined to be structurally unsafe. The building’s absentee owner has not responded to the county to answer questions about the reasons why the structure is in disrepair or to advise as to plans to repair the structure.
The cost to remove asbestos and demolish the building are expect to cost the county almost $80,000. However, that estimate does not include the costs for removal of asphalt and fuel tanks.
If the demolition project is approved, the county will place a lien against the property requiring the owner to repay the demolition and abatement costs. Otherwise, the county will be able to sell the property.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
