Alabama asbestos exposure: rock wool insulation, cement pipes, and more
In Alabama, asbestos has been hurting people in power plants, cement pipe companies, rock wool insulation factories, marine construction and repair, steel and iron mills, construction and other industries for years. Too many in Alabama were exposed to asbestos, and it is your right to seek compensation from the companies that produced the fibers and dust that made you sick.
Weitz & Luxenberg has a long list of job sites in Alabama where asbestos use is well documented. Below we provide details about selected locations of Alabama asbestos exposure. We do this in the hope that any Alabamian suffering the terrible health effects of asbestos exposure might see the name of a former employer on this site, and realize that you are not alone, and you can seek the compensation you need.
Leeds, Alabama asbestos exposure at Rock Wool Manufacturing Company
Rock Wool Manufacturing Company was founded in 1943 to manufacture residential blowing wool insulation. In the early 1950’s Rock Wool expanded into the industrial insulation market, producing mineral wool boards and insulating cements. (http://www.deltainsulation.com/aboutus.html)
“Insulating cements” most often mean the cement is an ACM: asbestos-containing material. Asbestos is both a renowned insulator and a known carcinogen. According to The Birmingham News, Rock Wool Manufacturing's decision to add asbestos to cement in the 1950's cost the company 140,000 lawsuits.(http://www.al.com/birminghamnews/asbestos/)
The Rock Wool Manufacturing Company (Rock Wool) filed a voluntary petition for relief under Title 11 of Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code on November 18, 1996 “...in order to develop a plan to manage and settle its asbestos personal injury and property damage claims.” (http://resasb.org/RWC_TR_History.aspx) Filing does not necessarily mean the company has run out of money. Often, they want time to, in their words, “develop a plan.”
In Birmingham and Fairfield, Alabama, asbestos imported 75 times
Libby, Montana has become nationally known for the tragic rates of asbestosis and mesothelioma, due to asbestos exposure from the now-closed W.R. Grace and Company vermiculite mine. A mine near Libby, Montana, was the source of over 70 percent of all vermiculite sold in the U.S. from 1919 to 1990. http://www.epa.gov/asbestos/pubs/verm.html
The vermiculite in Libby was contaminated by a nearby deposit of asbestos in the vermiculite mine, so not only the town of Libby, but the towns that received shipments from Libby, were exposed to asbestos. When the mine was active, Libby, Montana shipped vermiculite to no less than four locations in Alabama, with 33 shipments to Fairfield, Alabama, and 42 shipments to Birmingham, for a total of 3,625 tons of asbestos containing material brought into Alabama.

Ashville, Alabama: asbestos exposure from time at Cement Asbestos Pipe Co. fatal for Dennis Watson
Dennis Wayne Watson, formerly of Ashville, was exposed to asbestos-containing talc working as a tire builder for B.F. Goodrich from 1972 until 2001. He was also exposed to large amounts of raw asbestos while working for Cement Asbestos Pipe Company (CAPCO) for two weeks in 1972. (http://www.atla.org/asbestos/victims/asbestos06.pdf)
It does not take years of asbestos exposure to inhale enough to develop mesothelioma, as Mr. Watson did. Mr. Watson passed away in 2002, less than one year after his malignant mesothelioma diagnosis.
