Asbestos Found in Fire Debris in Alameda, CA

In April 2009, The Alameda Journal reported that residents are asking that additional environmental testing be conducted after asbestos debris was found in the Bay Area, CA town after a fire.

After the March 2009 fire at a former military base, an Alameda resident found a large chunk of debris in her yard. The property owner had the debris tested by Western Analytical Laboratory. The lab determined the debris chunk contained 10 percent non-friable asbestos.

Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
