Anchorage, AK Asbestos Contractor Fined for Clean Air Act Violations
At Anchorage, AK renovation or demolition sites where asbestos-containing materials (ACM) are present, asbestos abatement contractors are required to follow a number of federal and state regulations regarding the removal and disposal of ACM. Asbestos is a dangerous carcinogen, and exposure to it is known to cause serious illnesses such as mesothelioma cancer, asbestos-related lung cancer or asbestosis.
On September 8, 2009, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that an Anchorage, Alaska asbestos abatement and demolition contractor had settled a case involving alleged violations of the Clean Air Act and the National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP).
Between August 2007 and April 2008, the EPA conducted inspections of two demolition sites in Valdez, AK and one in Juneau. The investigation revealed several violations, including:
The company was fined almost $20,000 and will also be required to perform a community service project. However, the amount of the fine will be reduced by $14,800 upon completion of a Supplemental Environmental Project the company is required to perform. The company will remove asbestos insulation from a boiler and piping at a building owned by an Anchorage nonprofit theater group.
