In September 2008, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) fined six Arizona charter school operators a total of $11,600 for violations of the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA).
While representatives for the six schools asserted no asbestos-containing materials (ACM) were used at their schools, federal law requires them to conduct an initial inspection using accredited inspectors to determine if ACM is present and develop a management plan to address and report any possible asbestos found on the school properties.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
