ATSDR Agency Report on Asbestos-Containing Vermiculite

On October 29, 2008, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) released a report on 28 U.S. sites that received asbestos-containing vermiculite from mines in Libby, Montana.
The ATSDR selected sites for evaluation on the basis of whether the EPA required further action at a site based upon contamination and whether a site processed more than 100,000 tons of vermiculite from the Libby mine.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
The 28 sites are located in the following states:

- California: Los Angeles; Newark; Santa Ana
- Colorado: Denver
- Florida: Tampa
- Hawaii: Honolulu
- Illinois: Chicago
- Kentucky: Wilder
- Louisiana: New Orleans
- Maryland: Beltsville
- Massachusetts: Easthampton
- Michigan: Dearborn
- Minnesota: Minneapolis
- Missouri: St. Louis
- Montana: Libby
- Nebraska: Omaha
- New Jersey: Edgewater; Hamilton Township
- New York: Weedsport
- North Dakota: Minot
- Ohio: Marysville
- Oregon: Portland (N. Harding Avenue and N. Suttle Road)
- Pennsylvania: Ellwood City; New Castle
- Texas: Dallas
- Washington: Spokane
