The widow of a hospital worker who died from exposure to asbestos has received a settlement awarded for his injuries.
The man, who worked as a carpenter and joiner in the maintenance department for nearly three decades, died at just 64, in April 2005, of mesothelioma.
His wife recalled that as a maintenance worker he dealt with worktops, ceilings, and he had to take down water pipes that had to be looked at. Many of those jobs exposed him to asbestos fibers and dust.
One of her husband's colleagues, who was a plumber in the maintenance department, died from mesothelioma just two months after him, and his widow also received asbestos compensation.
Many plumbers, pipefitters and maintenance men have come forward to say their work environment led to a diagnosis of mesothelioma, asbestosis or lung cancer from asbestos.
