International Recall of Asbestos-Tainted Baby Powder Made by German Company
In April 2009, international health agencies in Korea and China announced they had quarantined supplies of NUK brand baby powder. The product, manufactured by a German company, was found to be contaminated with asbestos.
As of April 6, 2009, the product was recalled in Korea and China only. To date, there are no reports that tainted products were imported or sold in the U.S.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
