Is an asbestos ban in store for Canada?
August 24, 2009 – In 2007, the Canadian Cancer Society called for the government to phase out the use and export of asbestos. But despite the known health dangers of working with asbestos, Canada still continues to mine the mineral and remains the second largest exporter after Russia.
The bulk of Canada’s asbestos is shipped to developing countries, such as India and China.
Today, Canada is caught between a rock and a hard place. There is growing support for an asbestos ban in Canada, but this type of ban would have a devastating effect on the country’s asbestos revenues and the industry’s miners, who still make their living working with this dangerous mineral.
While most developing countries have banned asbestos completely, Canada's asbestos industry continues to support asbestos mining. Today, under pressure from health and environmental organizations, the Canadian asbestos industry is beginning to contract and exports are down to less than 25 percent of their original levels.
Other factors pressuring Canada’s asbestos industry include rising transportation costs and competing countries that can sell asbestos more cheaply, like Zimbabwe.
