Asbestos Concerns Complicate Potential Sale of Benson, AZ in City Hall Building

Since 2006, the City Council in Benson, AZ has been looking for a means to sell the vacant City Hall building. Plans to sell the property have been complicated by what is believed to be considerable asbestos contamination.

Since that time, a number of discussions have taken place regarding the value of the city hall property and estimated costs to have the asbestos removed.

In March 2009, the city’s Public Works Director was asked to hire a testing company to inspect the building and provide an estimate for abatement costs. Once the results of the tests are submitted, the city’s next steps will include determining whether the building should be demolished.
