SENATE BILL ON ASBESTOS
Weitz & Luxenberg recognizes Patty Murray’s
efforts in the Senate to establish “National Mesothelioma Awareness Day”
Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and Congresswoman Betty McCollum (D-Minn.) last week introduced Senate resolutions citing the health dangers of asbestos in the workplace to support a bill seeking to permanently designate September 26th as “National Mesothelioma Awareness Day.”
The personal injury law firm of Weitz & Luxenberg, which has protected the legal rights of asbestos-injured American workers since 1986, applauds the Senator’s work in banning asbestos. For nearly 25 years, our firm's mesothelioma lawyers have obtained several billion dollars in verdicts and settlements for clients fatally injured by occupational asbestos exposure.
Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.), a leading advocate for banning asbestos in the United States, said the Senate resolutions aimed at establishing Mesothelioma National Awareness Day call attention to the health risks asbestos poses to members of our military, firefighters, and workers and families across the county.
“The dangers of asbestos went unrecognized for far too long, with tragic results for so many workers and families across the country who developed mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases,” Sen. Murray said.
“National Mesothelioma Awareness Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of efforts to treat this deadly disease and support the victims and their families. I am committed to continuing my work fighting to ban asbestos in the United States and educating the American public about the deadly consequences of asbestos exposure.”
“Too many Americans don’t know that asbestos exposure remains a problem. Enacting National Mesothelioma Awareness Day (H. Resolution 771) is an important step towards educating the nation about the causes of this deadly disease,” Congresswoman McCollum said.
“I will continue to work with Senator Murray and my colleagues in the U.S. House to finally ban asbestos and provide real help for those suffering from mesothelioma and their families.”

The truth about asbestos
Despite the fatal diseases associated with asbestos exposure (i.e., mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis), asbestos is still imported and used in the United States for its insulation properties. The United States imported and used an estimated 1,820 tons of asbestos in 2007, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Government sources estimate that in the next decade more than 35,000 people nationwide will be diagnosed with the deadliest form of asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma.
