Boulder, CO Area School Closed After Asbestos Scare
On April 8, 2009, Southern Hills Middle School in Boulder, CO was closed as a precaution due to a possible asbestos contamination issue. The incident was caused by a contract employee working on the building’s heating and ventilation system cut into possible asbestos-containing material on the school roof.
When the incident was reported, students, faculty and staff were evacuated to the Boulder Valley School District’s high school gym.
Air testing performed at the school showed that no asbestos was released into the building, and the district announced the middle school would be open the next day.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
