On February 17, 2010, the Times News reported that the asbestos removal project at the Southern Alamance High School in the Burlington, NC suburb of Graham had been completed.

After water damage in the high school band room required the carpeting in the room to be replaced, asbestos-containing tiles were discovered under the damaged carpeting. The band room was then secured, and an asbestos abatement and removal company was hired to remove and dispose of the asbestos-containing materials (ACM) and debris.

Federal ACM Guidelines for Schools
All public, private, charter and parochial schools in the U.S. are required to follow the regulations in the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA).

In order to ensure that students, school teachers and staff are protected from potential exposure to the dangerous carcinogen (cancer-causing substance), schools are required to:

  • Conduct inspections of all school buildings for ACM;
  • Develop and maintain an asbestos management plan and to have a copy of the plan available for inspection at the school building;
  • Provide a yearly notification of the availability of the asbestos management plan to all parent, teacher and other organizations that use school facilities;
  • Appoint a contact person to make sure the asbestos management plan is implemented;
  • Make sure that only those who have been certified by the state to conduct inspections or to perform asbestos abatement are hired to conduct these actions; and
  • Conduct asbestos awareness training sessions with all school custodial and maintenance staff.
