On October 16, 2008, while the back-up boiler at the University of Vermont’s athletic field house was being serviced and inspected, an explosion inside the boiler caused a metal door on the rear of the boiler to blow open, injuring one of the workers. The explosion caused asbestos fibers to be released into the boiler room. The fibers did not travel to other sections of the Burlington, VT sports facility.
The University has hired a remediation firm to remove the asbestos from the facility’s boiler room. As soon as the remediation is completed, the University and state investigators will begin their investigation into the cause of the explosion. Records indicate the boiler was last inspected in July 2008, and the inspectors found no evidence of corrosion, warping or bulging of boiler parts, or damage to rivets, tubes, coils and other equipment.
