Glass Manufacturing Job Caused Asbestos Cancer: Removal of Powder in Cables a Risk
In recent news about the dangers of exposure to asbestos, a retiree's death was linked to an earlier job removing asbestos from cables.
The former cable worker was diagnosed with the asbestos-linked mesothelioma cancer in June 2006 and died on November 28.
The 78-year-old had reportedly worked as an apprentice, where part of his job involved removing asbestos powder from cables used for working with high heat and glass manufacture.
He told his attorney in a statement before he died, that e worked in old power stations, with asbestos insulation on the pipework and cables.
He said lagging and other maintenance work often went on in the vicinity, creating dust and there was no protective clothing or respiratory protection.
A pathologist at the hospital confirmed that he found a mesothelioma tumor in his chest, which had started to spread to his heart and liver. There were asbestos fibers in the lung tissue.
She said: "It's quite frightening to think it happened all those years ago. According to the medical profession, we are going to see an explosion in these types of cases over the next few years."
Many who worked removing asbestos from cables and pipework have come forward to say their work environment led to a diagnosis of mesothelioma, asbestosis or lung cancer from asbestos.
