Cambridge, NY School District Considering Options for Buildings with Asbestos
The Cambridge, NY school district is currently evaluating options with regard to unused properties where the district’s old bus garage and office building are located. One plan involves demolishing the structures. However, before any work can begin at the site, testing for environmental hazards such as asbestos, lead, PCBs and petroleum would need to be done.
The costs to perform the environmental study are estimated to cost $75,000. Because the site is in extreme disrepair, estimates to clean up and remodel the site are estimated to cost a minimum of $2 million. A local architect estimated the costs associated with demolishing the site and leveling the land to be approximately $925,000.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.
