Asbestos News: Mechanical contractors push for research on mesothelioma cancer in Canada.

In recent news about the dangers of asbestos exposure, the Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada (MCAC) in Ottawa has begun lobbying to promote research for cancers such as mesothelioma.

The organization chose to focus on mesotheliom because it is considered rather common among construction workers who have been exposed to asbestos.

MCAC members have been asked to help support research, development and early detection of mesothelioma through monetary donations.

It has established an account in trust and will donate all funds to the cancer society for mesothelioma research.

During renovations and repairs to older buildings, construction workers, tradespeople and other building maintenance workers may be exposed to very high concentrations of asbestos fibers.

The environment and work methods of these occupations are more difficult to control than fixed workplaces.

Asbestos poses health risks when fibers are present in the air that people breathe.

When inhaled, asbestos fibers can cause asbestosis (a scarring of the lungs which makes breathing difficult), mesothelioma (a rare cancer of the lining of the chest or abdominal cavity) and lung cancer, and other types of cancers.

Smoking, combined with inhaled asbestos, greatly increases the risk of lung cancer.
