In recent news about the danger of exposure to asbestos dust and fibers in a high-risk job, a carpenter apprentice died of cancer after he was exposed to asbestos at work.
The carpenter apprentice was required to cut joints using wood-cutting machines or hand-powered tools; assemble prepared wood to form structures and fittings work with plastic laminates, perspex or metal, and maintain and sharpen tools.
Unfortunately, may of the power tools he used contained asbestos, and many of the walls he worked on contained asbestos insulation. When he disturbed those walls, they emitted fibers that eventually became lodged in his lungs and resulted in mesothelioma.
In addition, while working in construction and carpentry, he was involved in the manufacture of fire doors, which used asbestos in their construction.
The 57-year-old carpenter was diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma in August and within a few months he was dead.
His brother said the disease had developed quickly: "It was so fast, so awful. He had started feeling rough in August last year and soon we knew something was very wrong."
Mesothelioma attacks the protective linings covering the body's major organs and is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos.
Symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear until 20 to 50 years after exposure.
Many carpenter apprentices have come forward to say their work environment led to a diagnosis of mesothelioma, asbestosis or lung cancer from asbestos.
