Carpentry: A high-risk field for asbestos diseases such as mesothelioma and lung cancer
Many in the carpentry trade are at high risk for illnesses related to asbestos due to the hundreds of products that in the past were made with the harmful carcinogen.
In very recent news, a former carpenter's exposure to asbestos led directly to his death of mesothelioma, reported the Sussex Express on August 19, 2008. He was just 57.
His wife, retired caterer, recalled that her husband had talked about being exposed to asbestos at work.
She remembers him saying that he was required to cut up asbestos with a saw, while a fellow employee held the other end.
His work entailed preparing sheeting for fitting out restaurants and kitchens.
He had not only cut up new sheets containing asbestos, but also removed old asbestos panels from buildings.
Her husband, she said, described the air in his workplace as being foggy due to asbestos dust, and that he and fellow workers did not have masks or other types of protective clothing.
Many carpenters have come forward to say their work environment led to a diagnosis of mesothelioma, asbestosis or lung cancer from asbestos.
