Asbestos cement siding legal advice
July 26, 2010 – According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), if asbestos cement siding (found on many homes built before the 1970s) is damaged, sanded, cut or drilled, those activities can release toxic asbestos fibers into the air creating a hazardous work site and ripe conditions for job-related asbestos exposure.
Accidental inhalation of airborne asbestos fibers at a construction site is the primary pathway for worker asbestos exposure, which is known to cause mesothelioma, the deadliest of asbestos-related diseases.
Asbestos kills approximately 10,000 people in the United States every year. Today, by law, asbestos abatement contractors must remove the toxic material before any renovation or demolition work proceeds.

Besides the thousands of workers who fitted asbestos cement siding during routine construction activities, workers in industrial cement plants were also at risk for developing asbestos illnesses.
Prior to the 1970s, factory workers were rarely advised to wear protective work gear. So their daily routine of mixing powdered asbestos ingredients with powdered cement, to produce moldable asbestos cement siding material, frequently led to asbestos exposure, especially in the confined areas of an industrial plant.
That’s why in 1977, the Consumer Product Safety Commission banned the use of asbestos in asbestos cement siding and most other construction products and materials.
Unfortunately, the ban applied only to the manufacturing of new supplies; existing stocks of asbestos cement continued to be used until the mid-1980s.
Due to the long latency period of mesothelioma, sometimes up to 50 years, many retired asbestos cement siding workers are only now being diagnosed with serious illnesses.
