Asbestos Retesting recommended for popular beach in Chicago
The Chicago Tribune newspaper reported on March 8, 2008 that Oak Street Beach needs to be retested for asbestos because previous tests for the cancer-causing substance weren't done properly.
The paper quoted a scientist on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's asbestos advisory board as urging the area be retested.
According to the article, in 2004, University of Illinois at Chicago scientists found asbestos fibers in 11 of 12 samples taken at the beach.
In response, the Chicago Park District ordered new tests. These found only extremely low levels.
Now, however, environmentalists are questioning those 2005 Park District tests over how they were done. The EPA Superfund chief in Chicago has asked for a review of the testing.
