Asbestos Concerns at Colorado Springs, CO School
In May 2009, leaders for a charter school in Colorado Springs, CO announced that one of the school’s two buildings would be closing permanently at the end of the 2008-2009 school year. The building to be closed is contaminated with asbestos.
While the school has dealt with controversy regarding budgeting and salary issues for the past several years, the school’s CFO had advised that the decision to close one building and consolidate students into one building comes from the fact that the school does not have the funds to either have the asbestos removed. The cost estimate for remediation is estimated at $600,000.
Exposure to asbestos is known to cause serious illnesses such as mesothelioma, asbestos-related lung cancer or asbestosis.
