In recent news about the dangers of asbestos and how a community is at stake, a group of community organizers claims it has been asked to pay almost $3,000 by its local council to remove cancer-causing asbestos from an area where children play, said the Rochdale Observer on September 10, 2008.
A community woman was appalled when she uncovered the asbestos during a clean-up of a play area near her home.
She immediately informed police, who sent an environemental asbestos specialist to verify the substance was indeed the cancer-causing mineral. That specialist confirmed the information to the community and cordoned off the area.
However, the specialist informed community residents that they would have to pay to have the asbestos removed and that it would cost $3,000.
The community is working for a way to raise the money so that its children will once again be able to play safely in the area.
Many people have come forward to say their community is filled with people whose exposure to asbestos led to a diagnosis of mesothelioma, asbestosis or lung cancer from asbestos.
